Whether you need to replace a faulty shower head or you’re simply installing an updated model, the process of removing an old shower head and replacing it with a new one is fast and easy. At Ben Franklin Plumbing of Durham, we get calls all the time from local residents who need help replacing shower heads, so we’ve put together this list of simple do-it-yourself tips to help out:
1.) Gather Supplies and Turn Off Your Water
Before you begin the replacement process, gather the right supplies. In most cases, you will need a wrench and plumber’s tape, but you may also need to have a set of screwdrivers on hand. It’s also helpful to have a rag with you for removing and cleaning your shower head and its plumbing. After you have your supplies, turn off the main water supply and then turn on the shower until it drains completely.
2.) Remove the Old Shower Head
To remove the old shower head, you will first want to cover the head and its neck with your rag. The reason for placing the rag over the head and its neck is so that you avoid scratching or scuffing the metal of your plumbing. Next, use your wrench to loosen the shower head by attaching the wrench to the nut of the head or neck and turning counterclockwise.
3.) Clean the Neck and Threading
Before attaching the new shower head, use your rag to wipe around the threading of the neck. Afterwards, wrap a piece of plumber’s tape around the threads, as this will ensure a better seal for the new head.
4.) Attach the New Head
Just as with removing the old head, cover your new head and its neck with your rag before attaching. Screw the new head in by hand, then use your wrench to complete the process. Afterwards, turn your main water supply back on and run the shower to check for leaks.
